In the spotlight: blended learning design

Consultancy

A training organisation wanted to deliver a portfolio of compliance products to its clients. However, rather than hosting an expensive commercial LMS they wanted a more cost effective solution that delivered simplicity to its clients, and ease of maintenance and administration for itself.

LIMBIC was commisioned to report on the wide range of open source LMSs, as well as other potential more affordable LMSs.

LIMBIC provided a comprehensive recommendations report and presentation focusing on the top contenders.

E-learning

A well known charity needed to train a number of its volunteers quickly. The charity's problems were twofold: volunteers were spread out across the UK, and prior attempts to introduce e-learnng into the organisation had died on their feet.

LIMBIC were contacted and invited in to discuss options and what could be done. The next day we were there. No wonder e-learning had such a bad reputation, while there we reviewed previous courses on the spot and calling it e-learning was the closest it got to learning.

Before LIMBIC left we'd agreed a way forward and started work on the requirements and design before the day was out.

In 3 weeks we turned round a simple but effective 30 minute e-learning course.

Key weaknesses

Sample blended solution

A large educational defence establishment requiring a mix of theoretical/ practical modules for a 40+ week course.
  • several cohorts per year
  • accredited
  • e-learning already introduced
  • available instructors
  • learn and dump
  • chalk and talk culture
  • less than optimal practical focus
  • Moodle portal allowing for self study and class delivery
  • self study courseware with content chosen by 80:20 rule
  • instructor led courseware for more complex / grey areas
  • wiki containing underpinning information
  • increased time for hands-on practical activites
