Blended learning

Blended Learning is the name given to an approach that mixes technology with more traditional learning materials/ delivery methods. A simple example would be an hour of
e-learning courseware followed by an hour's face to face time, finally followed up over several weeks with line manager weekly meetings

Many, many approaches to blended learning can be adopted, but most have certain common features:

  • Facts, figures and simple knowledge are treated in self study e-learning
  • More cerebral and 'soft' skills are kept in the classroom, together with role play activity
  • Compression of courses is common with the e-learning component typically reducing the original classroom time by double or more

More recently blended learning has come to embrace the huge opportunity that informal learning offers: basically the learning we achieve by being social in social interaction, whether it's in work or out of work, in-the-flesh or online.

The bottom line across all of this is that people are social animals, and learning can't all be about engaging with technology - even when its delivered on a Nintendo DS or the iPhone (even though that is very cool!).

A mix of formal (technology, classroom, outside classroom) and informal (technology, outside classroom) activity is now not just how we should see blended learning, but how we should see organisational learning today and in the future.

LIMBIC approach

We don't have a 'one-size-fits-all' approach when it comes to blended learning - in fact we think it would be a pretty big waste of such a flexible idea to do so. Every organisation is different (sounds clichéd we know!) but with so many strategies for blending learning we make sure you get the most optimal combination and style that maximises your organisational strengths to deliver long-term competitive advantage.
